Biography

I'm the AI & Cloud Architect for Gore Medical. I help shape the future of Gore's IT systems across multiple disciplines, and I lead our strategy for integrating AI and large language models into business processes and personal productivity. Before this I spent two years as a Solutions Architect with Amazon Web Services, and before that I was Gore's principal cloud engineer, architecting and leading the technical direction of our AWS and Microsoft Azure environments.

I've been in a number of roles, mostly infrastructure-related and developer-adjacent. I enjoy bringing programming skills to the environments I operate, build, and maintain, and I care about finding the right way to implement any technology I'm working with. I try to raise the level of the teams I work with by bringing in industry practices and researching the trends that could improve our tools and processes. Outside work I restore, tweak, and reprogram pinball machines.

AI & Cloud Architect

I drive architecture decisions for IT infrastructure, AI, cloud, networking, and databases across Gore Medical, the 7,000-associate global medical device division of W. L. Gore & Associates. I lead our strategy for integrating large language models into business processes and personal productivity, championing proof of concepts and taking the ones that work into production. I also own the architecture direction for retiring our Phoenix data center and moving those workloads to Azure.

Amazon Web Services

2022 - 2024

Solutions Architect

I worked with State and Local Government customers across the Western US, helping them design and implement cloud solutions to accomplish their mission quickly with the most effective solution possible. Most of my time went to complex hybrid cloud networking as part of a specialist networking team, plus the blog posts and sample code that came out of that work.

  • Primary architect partnering with all government customers in the State of New Mexico to design cloud architectures and advise on best practices using Amazon Web Services.
  • Regularly led in-depth technology discussions across all levels, including CIOs running large state agencies, technical architects, and engineers across multiple disciplines.
  • Consulted weekly on complex hybrid cloud network architectures as part of a specialist networking team, integrating across AWS, Azure, Direct Connect, ExpressRoute, Palo Alto, on-premises and co-located data centers, routing protocols, and automation, often all in the same architecture.
  • Spoke publicly on AWS topics at several local New Mexico events, and presented to large customer audiences to teach cloud concepts, run live demos, and drive progress.
  • Created several public technical artifacts including blog posts and sample code demonstrating AWS Well-Architected Framework best practices for scalable, reliable, and secure deployments.
  • Looked around corners to protect customers before they had issues, covering proactive cost optimization, architecture reviews, security, resiliency, and general cloud best practice.
  • Leveraged my wider experience to help customers tackle on-premises technical challenges, which built trust and positioned AWS as a long-term partner even before they were a customer.

Visual Subnet Calculator interface

Visual Subnet Calc

Visit visualsubnetcalc.comSource

A tool for quickly designing networks and collaborating on that design with others. It focuses on expediting the work of network administrators, not academic subnetting math. Put in a range, then visually split and join subnets within it. There is no database and no back-end; everything runs in the browser and generates links and exports so users can share their own designs.

I created this as a more feature-rich and modern version of a tool I found years ago and absolutely love by davidc. I always used screenshot tools to add notes and colors, and wanted a better way.
